Genesis 3:21
And the Lord God fashioned garments of animal skins for Adam and his wife and clothed them.
Coming from a 9 year career as a fashion design (now turned pastor/liturgical designer) I find Genesis 3:21 exceptionally intriguing. God, as Creator of the universe, is also the creator all vocations. Christians often seem to identify God as Creator, Judge, Physician/Healer, Architect and Counselor, yet rarely is God recognized as Divine Fashion Designer. As a fashion designer, I have often questioned my choice of career and how meaningful it is in the eyes of God to decide what colors are “trendy” for a particular season or what silhouettes, fabrications, print, and patterns are “hot”. I appreciate the beauty of this verse because it demonstrates that God is truly the “Jack/Jacqueline of All Trades”. If we are indeed made in the image of God, then each one of us has diverse skills, gifts and talents that we can share with others in the service of the Lord, including fashion design. God, in the Garden of Eden saw Adam and Eve in their shame. God, in only God’s great compassion, desired to cover this shame and designed the first form of adornment in fashioning clothing from skins for God’s beautiful human creation, Adam and Eve. Surely, if anyone understands the vocation of fashion design, the Lord God, Creator of all understands!
